I learned a lot more about the cultures of Africa than I learned in seventh grade. I have also learned about its landforms, and for the first time how the plateau slopes and made it difficult for Europeans to explore, for a time. The colonization of Africa was a grab for power and wealth. The Berlin Conference to divide Africa was another demonstration of the Europeans ethnocentrism. The changes the colonists inflicted on the economy were to get rich, and they began stripping Africa of her raw materials. This and well-meaning missionaries began destroying the African culture. This struggle between traditions and modern ways is still seen today. This is out of order, but who can forget the slave trade? Millions of Africans were ripped from their homes, ill-used and separated from their families. In the West Indies, the birth-rate of the slaves was so low and the death rate so high the almost half of the captured Africans were sent there. -Rachel White
According to the textbook, Africa was getting along fine when along comes the Europeans. Of course, technology and modernization came with them, and some Europeans simply wanted to help civilize the Africans. but the main thing they managed to do was devour natural resources, kidnap every strong Negro they could find, and blow African culture to smithereens. Prejudice spread so thick and fast that the KKK still exists today. But what's past is past; there's tons of stuff like this in the history of humankind, particularly Europe. Though it's taking a while, the strength and nationalism of the African people will help them recover, standing far taller than they ever were before. There's one thing that I'm glad happened, though--my favorite music all have African descent, since the "heartbeat" originated in Africa. Life just wouldn't be the same without hip-hop and jazz. XD
I learned that there were no problems between africa and europe before they decided to take advantage of africa. I learned that africa is actually a very amazing place. It is very resourceful and it is the center of many things around the world. I expanded my knowledge about africa greatly and now i understand all of the hardships and victories they had. I actually feel that i learned a lot about how the europeans decided to take over africa and split it among themselves. I thought it was so interesting how the advancements of both places played a big role in who gained power of that land. It was surprising that even though the europeans colonized africa and took their land, the africans gained something from it. They become more technologically, medically, and socially advances. But then again, the european colonization took a lot away from the africans too. Some lost their homes and ways of life that they had been used to for so long. I learned a lot from this chapter
