Reflection: Blog 12

9.4.6 Reflect: Dang Xiaoping responded to critics of his economic reforms with this traditional saying; "It doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice."
What did he mean by this?

  1. Deng Xiaoping responded to criticism in this way to prove a point. What he meant was that the results were more important than how he did something. The color of a rat-catching cat is unimportant, but it's ability to chase and kill rodents. If the government worked and did its job properly, than how it did the necessary jobs were irrelevant. Deng was saying, to quote another proverb, "The ends justify the means."

  9. Dang Xiaoping meant that it does not matter what his choices were or who does or doesnt agree with them, as long as they make the economy successful and as long as the method works. It does not matter the color of the cat(what it appears to be) as long as it does its job to catch mice.

  10. Dang Xiaoping means that the beautie of the cat has nothing to do with the ability. baiscly he is saying that a black cat can do the same thing as a white maybe even more and if it gets the job done why do judge.
